Laserderm is the first center in Canada to offer the FemiLift as part of our new Women’s Health Program.  As a world-class laser facility, we are committed to providing the highest level of care to our patients, which is why Dr. Laughlin continues to be at the fore-front of innovation in laser and anti-ageing therapies. The recent advances in non-surgical treatment options for women with pelvic health issues prompted Dr. Laughlin to look at this emerging field. She also recognized that there is growing number of women who have pelvic health needs which are not being met by traditional therapies. Did you know?

Pelvic support issues can affect women of all ages from ordinary life events such as childbirth, weight fluctuations, menopause and hormone changes. Some disease processes and cancer treatment can also negatively affect pelvic health.

The changes that occur in the vagina and surrounding structures may result in symptoms of:

  • Urinary stress incontinence (leakage of urine with jumping, sneezing, running, etc) as a result of vaginal wall laxity or stretching

  • Dry and irritated vaginal walls from menopausal hormone changes or sudden changes in hormone levels as a result of chemotherapy

  • Pain (dyspareunia) or decreased sensation with intercourse

Since 1987 Dr. Laughlin has introduced countless laser and anti-ageing procedures that enhance patient care in general and cosmetic dermatology; now she is offering solutions for women who want to optimize their pelvic health, without surgery and without pain or down-time. Dr. Denis Dudley, Executive Director of Laserderm, is an Ob-Gyn. He was former Director of High-Risk Pregnancy at the Civic Hospital for many years, and he practiced in the sub-speciality of maternal-fetal medicine and reproductive endocrinology. Although he no longer delivers babies, he provides endocrinology (hormone) counselling to our patients when needed. The synergy between the two specialties: Laser Dermatology and Gynecology is what makes the Women’s Health Program at Laserderm so unique. Dr. Jennifer MacIsaac, our new Associate Dermatologist, comes with a background in Family Medicine with advanced training in Gynecology. She oversees the FemiLift Laser program and will manage the care of our patients requiring pap smear testing, pelvic exams, and outside referrals to gynecologists for surgical intervention. This all-star ensemble of medical experts, along with the attentive care of our nurses, makes up the Laserderm Women’s Health Program.

We also partner with health professionals in the community in order to care for our patients in a holistic manner. Some patients who require surgery or ancillary therapies may be referred to gynecologists, specialized pelvic floor physiotherapists, or sex counsellors/therapists. Breast cancer survivors who have undergone chemotherapy are also referred to us for pelvic health therapies.

Facts about Pelvic health:

  • Studies report that while many women experience vaginal health issues, only a small percentage discuss it with their physician. Part of the problem is that traditional gynecology is focused on hormone replacement or surgical treatment of disorders, so pelvic issues that are not severe enough for surgery are not given the due attention, MOSTLY BECAUSE THERE WERE NO MEANINGFUL SOLUTIONS. There is especially a void in solutions for sexual dysfunction (This is where the O-Shot comes in… ask more about it at your next visit!)

  • Referrals for gynecology consultations are still an integral part of the Women’s Health Program. Traditional gynecology approaches may include hormone therapy for the management of menopause, surgical and non-surgical treatment options (such as prostheses) for bladder or bowel prolapse or other indications for vaginal reconstruction.

  • Specialized pelvic support physiotherapists can help patients to rehabilitate pelvic floor muscles when there are muscle tone factors that contribute to the pelvic disorder. Gone are the days when the only advice given for improving pelvic floor muscles is “just do your Kegels!” For more information on how pelvic floor physiotherapy can help, go to http://www.pelvicsupport.com/

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the FemiLift?

The FemiLift is an FDA cleared/Health Canada approved non-surgical, painless laser procedure that helps to treat vaginal atrophy (thinning and irritation)and dryness, vaginal laxity, and mild urinary incontinence.

How does it work?

The fractional CO2 laser creates precise micro-wounds or “dots” of ablation in the vaginal wall, which stimulates new collagen, elastin, and vascular supply. CO2 laser ablation has been used for decades now to resurface or virtually replace old tissue with new tissue. Think of this as anti-ageing for the vagina, the tissue is restored for more optimal tone and sensitivity, proper lubrication, and better control of the urethra due to tissue tightening.

When will I notice the results?

Patients often report that the symptoms of vaginal dryness and urinary stress incontinence are improved even after the first session. Three sessions done monthly give the optimal result, it takes only 20 minutes each visit and you can return to work immediately after.

Will it hurt and is there recovery time?

Most patients report that the laser procedure is painless, and you can return to normal activities immediately. A pap smear is described as more uncomfortable than the FemiLift procedure. Insertion of tampons and sexual intercourse should be avoided for 48 hours.

How long do the results last?

Long term benefits are appreciated for 24 months. Patients may consider re-treatment after 2 years or if symptoms of vaginal atrophy or laxity return.

How long after childbirth should I wait before having the FemiLift treatment?

You should wait a minimum of 3 months before the FemiLift treatment.
