Regenerative Medicine is arguably the most exciting new frontier in medicine today. It includes treatments that harvest and concentrate components of your blood and/or cells, and deliver them (either through direct injection or laser-assisted delivery) to tissue which needs repair, restoration, or rejuvenation. Autologous Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cell therapy are now being used in many different medical disciplines such as: neurology, orthopaedics, endocrinology, cardiology, urology, ophthalmology, plastic surgery and dermatology.

Dr. Laughlin concentrates on innovation that keeps her practice at the forefront of cosmetic/ laser dermatology and anti-ageing medicine. She introduced PRP at Laserderm because it is a drug-free, simple and safe therapy as an adjunct to existing laser therapies, and as a stand-alone procedure for:
• Scar therapy (improving the texture, tone and mobility of scars)
• Rejuvenation and anti-ageing (wrinkles, photodamage, dark circles under eyes, and crepe like skin)
• Hair loss in men and women
• Sexual Health. The O-Shot® for enhancement of the female orgasm.

The O-Shot® is a procedure branded by the Internal Medicine physician, Dr. Runels, who also coined the term “Vampire Facelift,” which was made famous by many celebrities. The concept of restoration and rejuvenation using PRP was applied to key structures of sexual genitalia, and the O-Shot became an empowering treatment for women who wanted better orgasms. While there are many important factors to be considered when discussing sexual dysfunction, including hormonal, physiological and psychological conditions, an otherwise healthy woman who simply wants to improve or enhance her sexual satisfaction without drugs, hormones or surgery now has an innovative and safe treatment option.

Some medical conditions which can improve as a result of the O-Shot are:
o Dyspareunia or inorgasm (pain with intercourse or inability to achieve orgasm)
o Mild urinary stress incontinence
o Dryness and irritation of vaginal mucosa
o Lichen Sclerosis (this and other autoimmune disorders are currently being researched by leading OB/Gyn experts in the US, there seems to be promising outcomes for these patients in the early data)

The O-Shot® procedure involves taking a blood sample, harvesting the PRP and injecting it strategically and precisely into key structures responsible for the orgasmic response. There is only minimal discomfort, as anaesthetic is used to keep patients comfortable and the procedure takes only 3o minutes from start to finish. There is no recovery time and patients return to normal activities immediately. Some patients have combined the O-Shot with the FemiLift laser treatments for an enhanced pelvic make-over!

Dr. Runels authored a book about the O-Shot invention called, Activate the Female Orgasm. It is a free Kindle download from the Amazon site. Or if you would like to borrow a paperback copy, you can call us to request a free loaner.

Frequently Asked Questions about PRP and Stem cells:

What are platelets and why is platelet rich plasma (PRP) so valuable?
Platelets are the key factors of hard and soft tissue repair mechanisms. Plasma contains many factors essential for cell survival such as nutriments, vitamins, hormones, electrolytes and proteins. Plasma also contains the molecules for coagulation (clotting), which signals the body to initiate the repair process. Platelets provide the essential growth factors (FGF, PDGF, TGF-ß, EGF, VEGF, and IGF) involved in:
• Stem cell migration, differentiation and proliferation. This means any type of tissue healing and repair that occurs in the body requires functional platelets to be involved in the regenerative process. They are seen as “the workers” or the crew needed at a construction site.

• Stimulation of cells such as fibroblasts and endothelial cells, to induce new extracellular matrix deposition and neo-vascularization. Dermatological conditions such as wounds, scars, and some inflammatory disorders benefit from PRP therapy.

• Anti-ageing and rejuvenation, where we rely heavily on the body growing new collagen, elastin, and all the components surrounding these structures (extracellular matrix) in order to improve the tone, texture and quality of skin. PRP stimulates fibroblasts to create new collagen at the site of injection or application.

How is PRP harvested and how do I know it is safe?

A small sample of your blood is taken, just like getting bloodwork done at the lab. The sample is processed in a centrifuge so the platelets become concentrated in the plasma layer. The other components of blood such as the red and white cells are separated and discarded. The reinjection of autologous PRP is safe because a patient cannot have an allergic reaction to their own plasma or cells. The harvest kits and technology used are FDA and Health Canada approved, and our medical staff follow strict protocols to ensure the most effective and safe harvesting of your PRP.

What are Stem Cells?

According to the NIH definition: The adult stem cell can renew itself and can differentiate to yield some or all of the major specialized cell types of the tissue or organ. The primary roles of adult stem cells in living organisms are to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are found.
Adult stem cells can be extracted from bone marrow, adipose (fat) tissue and harvested for reinjection into tissue where repair, healing or rejuvenation is beneficial. Orthopaedic surgeons focused on regenerative medicine are using stem cell and PRP therapy to heal degenerative and injured joints, either to replace or defer more invasive surgery. Research centers are now getting major attention in Canada because of the potential for advances in disease management and prevention.
Fat harvesting and grafting is a procedure that has existed for many years in plastic surgery and dermatology. Today, with better harvesting technology and protocols, fat grafting can be used for many indications such as:
• Scar revision
• Rejuvenation and non-surgical facial augmentation
• Correction of lipo-atrophic defects

Dr. Laughlin will begin using a very precise method of fat grafting called Micro-lipografting to harvest the fat. Rather than extracting fat cells using a liposuction device, which can critically damage the stem cells, a manual technique using gentle aspiration from a syringe is used in order to preserve maximum viability of the stem cells in the fat tissue. The fat sample is then processed and injected into the target tissue, like facial areas in place of synthetic fillers. Once the fat grafting process is complete (usually over a series of visits), the result is permanent. It will not be absorbed and need retreatment as is necessary with some synthetic fillers. Therefore, this kind of augmentation is best performed with a gradual “less is more” conservative approach, until optimal results are achieved. Not everyone is a candidate for micro-lipografting, but an assessment of potential donor sites and the target site can be done to determine your candidacy. Abdominal fat is an ideal donor site, although it can be harvested from other areas of the body as well. In some instances, the best results may be achieved by combining the stemcell-rich fat graft with PRP before injection.
